At Johns Hopkins, Thom taught creative writing for five semesters, guiding classes of 5–15 undergraduates in reading and writing fiction and poetry. He developed a sharp eye for structural and grammatical issues that often keep apprentice writers from producing edited, publishable work. He has a keen ear for unnatural dialogue, point-of-view slips, plot holes, fuzzy metaphors, and other common pitfalls in apprentice writing.
Beyond the classroom, Thom served as social media editor and staff writer at The Millions, where he wrote hundreds of literary news posts and spent five years curating the site’s weekly roundup of new book releases. He draws on that experience to help students refine nonfiction projects, particularly book reviews and literary commentary.
